Repairers of the Breach

No Room In the Inn

As our homeless in Milwaukee county fill available shelter bed capacity on dangerously cold winter nights there is quickly no more room. Only three organizations are opening their doors as overnight warming rooms Milwaukee County to shelter the overflow as temperatures/wind chills reach life-threatening lows.

Repairers of the Breach is one of these safe havens. This week the nights burst at the seams as police and other agencies send homeless men and women to them for shelter.

Executive Director James West commented, "The homeless are in bad shape. Some come with no coats, no good shoes, and all are in need of a shower and clean underwear. Because of our compassionate donors we were able to meet their needs, but we were stretched to the limit and beyond. The numbers are increasing by the day, but as long as we have the support of the community, we are willing to serve to capacity.”

So many people sought shelter at Repairers of the Breach this week that the center needed to open a section of the second floor in their three-story building. Pastor West anticipates soon having to open up the third floor, as well.

How can you help?

Operating the warming room costs Repairers around $500 per night. Those expenses double and triple, however, as the numbers of people increase. Hot showers and clean towels mean the water bill rises. Opening the center’s upper floors means turning on heat and lights that are normally shut off at night. Additionally, Repairers employees may need to work overtime shifts to provide the extra staffing required to keep everyone safe and warm on multiple floors.

Kudos to James West and to Repairers of the Breach staff for their commitment to providing emergency basics and a safe haven for all comers. Special thank you for the help from the Milwaukee Police Department for transporting homeless people to their doors.
